Each portrait is a true likeness aimed at capturing the person's character and has a strikingly realistic three dimensional look with a rich painterly texture or soft velvet feel.

Now emerging as a major feature of John's work, his portraits are attracting much interest. John's newly discovered talent for portraiture appeared after joining a life drawing group in 2005. This year he entered, for the first time, the Archibald Prize for Portraiture, with his portrait of The Hon Alexander Downer MP and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize with his portrait of Wytt Morro. Both of these paintings are currently on display at the John McCartin Fine Art Gallery..
